Have you ever wondered how a news story comes together? Recently, I wrote a story while investigating the athletic directorship of Washington High School. The story came together in four chunks. Are you interested in seeing how the story grew?
The story first began when I found out who was going to take over the job as athletic director. It doesn't have much info … just the who and where. The story grew when I added a little background information on the new AD, and again when I got comments from the former AD. The fourth, and final, version of the story came to be when I finally got up with the man himself … and collected the full who, what, when, where and why. Here are the four versions of the story, as I saved them along the evening.

Bing Mitchell didn’t carry the title “former Panthers head coach” for very long. Sources inside the Washington High School athletic program say that Mitchell will be the school’s athletic director when school resumes this fall.
Mitchell, also a former Pam Pack football coach, was the football coach and athletic director for Northside High School in the 1-A ranks last season.
He will be the Pam Pack’s fourth athletic director in recent school years. After Brian Paschal left Washington to become the head football coach at Roanoke High School, Penny Paul and Rick Anderson served as Washington ADs.
Anderson served as both assistant principal and athletic director last year.
Mitchell is a resident of Washington, and leaves open football coach and athletic director spots at Northside High School.

He then coached at Bertie from 1968-72. In the fall of 1972, he came to Beaufort County where he coached football at Bath High School.
Mitchell landed in Washington in 1980, and he coached the Pam Pack for seven seasons compiling a 28-42 record.
Mitchell leaves open football coach and athletic director spots at Northside High School. The school is currently holding interviews for both positions.

With the start of school next fall, Anderson will take over the head principal job at Chocowinity Middle School. Anderson says Mitchell brings a lot of positives to the Washington AD job.
“I think Bing will do an outstanding job at Washington,” Anderson said. “He has a lot of experience in sports.”

Mitchell has been named Washington High School’s athletic director, and will be leading the Pam Pack athletic teams when school resumes this fall.

Another thing Mitchell could do to bring success to Washington is be a long-term leader who is already aware of the high standards of excellence expected from Pam Pack athletics.
Mitchell thinks he’ll be around for a while.
“I really hope so, I hadn’t thought of it like that until now,” Mitchell said, after hearing he is the fourth Washington athletic director in four years. “I’m looking forward to going to Washington and trying to run that program the best I can. One thing that really influenced me to take the Washington job was Steve Hagen. His enthusiasm to get the (school’s athletic) program running on the right track really impressed me. I hope to be there for a while.”

“I’m going to miss Northside; I’m certainly sad to leave there,” Mitchell said. “It’s been a part of my life for so long, but I think it’s time to do something different. I know I’ll miss coaching, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Mitchell will begin work at the school sometime this summer, and he will also be teaching classes in the fall.
“There are some things I’ll have to do this summer to get caught up,” Mitchell said. “I don’t know the exact date I’ll start, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to teach a strength class. That’s my favorite thing (to teach). I’m going to either have one or two periods. I don’t know yet; that hasn’t been worked out.”
